Do we want all ash trees to be left in place?

No.

Sometimes there are perfectly good reasons to destroy trees. One of these may apply to yours and you may choose to have them removed.
  • They are infested. (They have bugs in them)
  • They are infected. (They have a disease)
  • They are already dead and pose a hazard to persons or property.
  • They may become a hazard to persons or property in the near future.
  • You just feel like it and they are your trees.
  • They may become infested, infected or a hazard anytime in the future and someone or some agency has offered to remove them for you now at no cost to you.
None of those apply to John’s trees. The last one almost applies to his trees except that the state is not offering to destroy them, they are insisting upon destroying them. John is treating them to prevent infestation from the EAB, but, that seems to make no difference to the state.

Do we feel that all dead or infested trees should be destroyed?

Not necessarily.

We think that there are many times when dead or infested trees can serve a good purpose. Most of these apply only to woodlot trees. (trees which are not right in your front or backyard or in a public setting where they might pose a hazard to persons or property)

Dead trees left standing can provide perches for birds which sometimes prefer foliage free trees for viewing their environment. Dead trees can provide homes for wildlife and non-destructive insects. Some people like the way they look in a woodlot, very natural. In a nature setting they can act as teaching tools for classes on ecology and natural processes of the earth. Even infested trees could serve a purpose if you treat them with pesticides and allow them to attract additional pests which you would like to eradicate.
